Why was WindowMizer removed from the Mac App Store?

WindowMizer has been removed the Mac App Store because it no longer meets Apple requirements due to its use of the Accessibility API. In order to improve WindowMizer and add new features, we chose to remove it and distribute it ourselves.

Licenses purchased via the App Store can be be upgraded to WindowMizer 3 for a limited time. Please follow the instructions in the FAQ for: I bought WindowMizer from the Mac App Store. How do I Upgrade?

Why is WindowMizer an Application, and not a System Extension?

As far as I am aware, there are only 2 methods available to control windows that do not belong to your own application.

The first method involves writing a hack that injects code into all other applications. While this method may work, it can lead to instabilities in those applications. Additionally, as is evidenced by the demize of WindowShade from Unsanity, this type of hack is becoming more and more difficult to accomplish, due to new security features of recent Mac OSes. This security trend is expected to continue, so when developing WindowMizer, a new approach was necessary.

The second approach, and the one adopted by WindowMizer, is to use Apple provided methods to control other applications windows. By using approved methods, it is more likely that the ability to control other windows will not break with every OS upgrade.

So, to summarize, WindowMizer is an application because the only other alternative is a system hack, and that method breaks too easily.

Some of the benefits of the method WindowMizer uses to control windows are:

  • WindowMizer works on the latest versions of MacOS and should continue to do so.
  • WindowMizer does NOT modify the Operating System (OS X) in any way.
  • WindowMizer does NOT inject code into other applications
